| Content | content The real life story of the childhood of the model for 'John' of Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons', along with her siblings Susan, Titty and Roger. It contains strong parallels between the Altounyans' lives and those of the fictional Swallows. Much of the account is of time in Aleppo in Syria, where the author's father was in charge of a hospital, but it also describes holidays in the English Lake District, staying with the Collingwoods (her maternal grandparents) and a number of encounters with Arthur Ransome. There are fifteen chapters: 1) 'Black Gran'pa and White Gran'pa', 2) 'Journey to Syria and First Impressions', 3) 'First Days in Aleppo and the Old House', 4) 'Settling Down', 5) 'The New House', 6) 'Inside the Fortress', 7) 'Lessons', 8) 'Feast Days and Celebrations', 9) 'The Hospital', 10) 'The View From the Battlements', 11) 'Sorties Outside the Fortress', 12) 'Summer in the Mountains', 13) 'Back to Aleppo', 14) 'Exile - England and School' and 15) 'Return to Aleppo'. . |
