Welcome to Kirkland Books of Kendal

Arthur Ransome

Arthur Ransome, most widely known for the twelve Swallows and Amazon Books (or 13 including the unfinished Coots of the North), was also the author of forty or so other titles including other children's books, fishing books, sailing books and books on politics. He is one of the best loved children's authors of the twentieth century and has become highly collected. We stock a wide range of first edition Arthur Ransome books, especially from the Swallows and Amazons Series. Our emphasis is on books in very good condition or better and with the correct very good condition jackets. We also run the Arthur Ransome Society Stall (TARS members only). We are only a few minutes walk from Abbot Hall, the home of the Arthur Ransome Society, with its Arthur Ransome exhibition, so its easy to combine a visit there with a browse of our stock. Of course if you visit in the Lakes, there are many other Ransome sites to see, from Wildcat Island, to The Old Man of Coniston. Next time you are in the Lakes, and the weather turns foul or you need a rest, feel welcome to come and browse our stock, talk to us about your experience of the books or your plans for your next adventure. We hope you will find something to buy, but its not compulsory! We are also always interested in buying Arthur Ransome related books, drawings and memorabilia, so if you're thinking about selling, drop in or follow the Our Wants links to find out more.
